MCA deputy presidential aspirant Dr Chua Soi Lek lodged a police report yesterday in response to a series of cartoons being anonymously distributed to delegates who will vote in party elections on Oct 18.

“I know that these cartoons were previously posted to the homes of delegates and the mainstream media. After I announced my candidacy for the deputy presidency, more cartoons were sent out,” Chua told a press conference in Petaling Jaya today.

chua soi lek pc 260908 05 “These cartoons not only accused me of misconduct as a medical practitioner in the 70’s, they also alleged that I have stakes in major development projects under the Health Ministry during my tenure there.”

The former health minister related that the postings begun in August, with two or three being sent weekly. He showed one of the cartoons to the media - as they were being sent even to him. Chua is also a central delegate.

The final cartoon received by Chua 'showed' him bribing the 1,500 central delegates with RM10,000 each.

Copies of the cartoons were also enclosed in Chua’s police report lodged at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters.

The former MCA vice-president was health minister before resigning from both positions on Jan 1 this year following a sex scandal . He believed the personal and incriminating videos of him and a partner were distributed by a group bent on destroying his political career.

Suspicion within

Chua suspects foul play from within the MCA and has forwarded the names of two party members whom he had identified as the culprits. However, he refused to reveal their identities to the press.

As the allegations in the cartoons mainly make references to his Health Ministry days, Chua believes the conspirators “have access to the ministry”.

chua soi lek pc 260908 04 The fact they have information of all central committee members such as their addresses leads Chua to believe they have access to the party secretariat too.

“I think they (the suspects) have friends in the secretariat. Although both of them do not hold government positions, they are in close working relationship with someone who holds a government position,” he alleged.

However, when asked if that ‘someone’ holding a government position was involved, Chua replied, “No”.

But he reckons that since only a small number of people have access to the ministry and the secretariat, it will not be difficult to track the culprits.

This whole affair is sickening - it insults the intelligence of central delegates and can be destructive to the party’s image, Chua added.
