Will Ramli stand a chance?
Nov 2, 07 1:41pm
After what had happened to Anwar Ibrahim, what chance do Ramli Yusuff have of a fair hearing or for justice to be served?

On Ramli charged for non-disclosure of assets

Ah Chong: Ten years ago, the deputy prime minister, recognised internationally as an up-and-coming Asian leader, was forcibly arrested at his house, beaten up and possibly left to die in Bukit Aman. It was later discovered that he was karate chopped and punched by none other than the police chief himself. Throughout the next five years, the government made a mockery out of two court cases against him as they sought all kinds of ways to put him away.

What sort of chance do you think Ramli Yusuff, director of CCID in the Royal Malaysian Police, have of any sort of fair hearing or for justice to be served? Nazri yesterday condemned Ramli for going to the press rather than seeking justice in the courts. The truth is, even civil servants know the nature of our courts and until credibility is reinstated, there will always be a big question mark on the judiciary system in Malaysia. The blindfold on lady justice has fallen off and the scale in her hand has been tampered with.

An independent police commission is needed desperately to sort out issues like these. How do we know for sure which side is telling the truth? All we, the rakyat, want is for a clean police force - one that has no links to the underworld, is discipline and does its job effectively and efficiently. Is that too much to ask for simple taxpayers like us?

Ah Meng: CCID chief Ramli’s acknowledgment of the abuse within the police force, ACA and AG’s office is a clear indication that all is not well in the nation. The police are fighting among themselves while the rakyat are facing unprecedented levels of crime. Pak Lah has lost control of the nation and as internal security minister, he should step down immediately.

MSY: Anwar Ibrahim’s concern for the safety of the whistleblowers in the Lingam tape is now a very valid concern. It is exposed that the ACA has no regard for the safety and confidentiality of informants.

Where is this nation heading to? With the judiciary in shambles, the police fighting among themselves, leaders amassing wealth like there’s no tomorrow and the people struggling to make ends meet due to runaway inflation, I think it’s time for a change.

On ‘Video probe complete, authenticity questionable’

Peter Ooi: I do not know whether to cry or laugh at the findings of the ACA. What are the attributes of a genuine recording? Granted, the tape is definitely not the original. A duplicated copy must have been passed on to Anwar. If to establish the authenticity of the recording is based solely on getting the original tape, then the authority is asking for the moon.

As has been mentioned many times on the Internet, if the speaker is Lingam, whose identity could be established by his appearance and his body movement, the voice is his and not being dubbed, that should be enough to conclude that the recording is authentic and the conversation did indeed take place.

On Federal Court decision a blow to democracy

G Thomas: Why is a 12-year old boy convicted of murder and sent to prison under a law that presumes he is capable of understanding the consequences of his act, the same law that provides for the defence of insanity in an adult on the say so of someone else? The law also defines a woman aged, say 16, as incapable of consenting to sexual intercourse and therefore any male that does it with her will be convicted of statutory rape.

How does the law decide on the age or mental capacity for guilt? Has too much education twisted human judgement and sense of justice? Or is urbanisation at fault?

On Ali Rustam: PPP can leave BN - now

Sadirah K: While many of us may not be supporters of the PPP, we view the insults of Ali Rustam - the self-styled senior vice-president of Umno - very gravely. At last, it took a power hungry Umno leader to expose himself and then hide behind the skirt of the deputy president. Apparently, he had to use Najib’s name to lend credibility to his stand.

If the PPP had any self-respect, they would oblige him and leave the BN for this is no way to treat a coalition member. They should at least have shown some guts and given an ultimatum to Umno that such behaviour will not be tolerated for this goes against the code of the Barisan Nasional. Unless serious disciplinary action is taken against Ali Rustam, such conduct and behaviour is going to be rampant.

If this is the level to which an Umno leader descends then it is also an indication of where Umno stands. What is sad is that no other component party within the BN has made a statement against such conduct. So much for their sense of solidarity. This only confirms that they are a ‘coalition of the self-serving’.
