DAP chairperson Karpal Singh wants Jerai MP Badruddin Amiruldin to retract his statement likening him (Karpal) to a disabled in Parliament yesterday.

Badruddin was heard saying that Karpal is wheelchair-bound because "God has punished you (him)" and his statement caused a ruckus among opposition MPs.

The Jerai MP is well known for using 'colourful' languages in the august House - the most recent of which was the work bocor (leaking) which women found insulting and unacceptable.

The News Straits Times today reported that Badruddin had refused to retract his statement because he reasoned that Karpal had said worst things about BN backbenchers.

In a statement in response today, Karpal conceded that he had used words like animal and bodoh (stupid) but defended his action saying they were "warranted under the circumstances"

Karpal also argued that Badruddin's remarks were far worst and alleged that the Jerai MP once uttered p**i mak , a word considered extremely obscene and insulting for Malaysians.

"What could be worst than using that word in the august chamber of Parliament?. Badruddin is also on record as saying Malaysia is an Islamic state and if non-Malays are not happy they should get out of the country," said the lawyer and Bukit Gelugor MP.

'Face the consequences'

He added that Badruddin's defense is totally unacceptable as his remark had insulted those wheelchair-bound and the disabled as a whole.

Karpal gave the Umno MP till Monday to retract his statement or "face the consequences".

The DAP legislator also said he was disappointed with Speaker Ramli Ngah Talib for not instructing Badruddin to withdraw and apologise to him for making such statements.

Progressive People's Party president M Kayveas (BN-Taiping) was also implicated by Karpal as another figure known to have made insensitive remarks about his disability.

"Clearly, Members of Parliament of the Barisan Nasional are on record to have made insulting, insensitive and obscene remarks in Parliament," he added.

Karpal was involved in a car accident near his Penang residence in January 2005 which rendered him immobile and wheelchair-bound.
