The police are allowing limited sale of fireworks this festive season.

There will be 36 types of fireworks that can be sold to the public.

However, nine types of loud fireworks - including the iconic red firecrackers and notorious "Happy Boom shoot cake" - can only be bought with written consent from the police.

Anyone who wishes to sell fireworks must obtain the proper licences and cannot sell to anyone below the age of 18 or online.

For consumers, they must be mindful of when they use the fireworks.

"To avoid disturbing and endangering others, the use of fireworks is forbidden after midnight.

"It can only be used in open and safe areas," said deputy inspector-general of police Mazlan Mansor in a statement today.

Mazlan said fireworks are still banned under the Explosives Act 1957, however, the Home Ministry will be allowing for the import, storage and trade in fireworks just for the festive season.
