Cameron polls observer dies of heart attack

CAMERON POLLS | Abdul Jalil Ismail, an observer of the Cameron Highlands parliamentary by-election, died of a heart attack at his home in Kuala Lumpur, according to the Election Commission (EC).

He was 61.

EC chairperson Azhar Azizan Harun said Abdul Jalil, who is vice-president of Kelab Pemikir Politik Nasional (KPPN), died after his return from the nomination for the by-election which was held last Saturday.

“The EC appreciates very much the contribution of his efforts and ideas to improve the election system and process in the country in ensuring that democratic practices through elections continue to flourish,” he said in a statement today.

Azhar extended the condolences of the EC to Abdul Jalil’s family members and expressed the hope that they would be strong in their moment of bereavement.

He said Abdul Jalil had been the observer for several other by-elections, including for Sungai Kandis, Balakong, Seri Setia and Port Dickson.
