Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar is confident Pakatan Harapan can win the constituency, even though PAS is expected to field Kedah football legend Radhi Mohd Din as its candidate.

"I am confident Pakatan Harapan can win this seat as the people in the constituency want a change in the state (Kedah) and country's administration.

“So, of course, when we talk about transition, the rakyat see Harapan as the only trustworthy option," he said when contacted by Malaysiakini.

Mahfuz was commenting on a Sinar Harian report that Radhi, 53, could be fielded as the PAS candidate for Pokok Sena in the upcoming 14th general election.

Radhi (photo) said that he had previously helped make PAS programmes in Pokok Sena a success, but it had never occurred to him that he would be fielded as a candidate.

Mahfuz, who is a former PAS vice-president, said he would respect any candidate the Islamist party fielded.

"I do not know whether I will still contest, but I will support the Harapan candidate. In the name of democracy, I also respect and welcome the candidate that PAS is going to field."

The incumbent Pokok Sena parliamentarian won the seat for the second consecutive time at the 2013 general election in a straight fight with Umno. However, Harapan will be hard pressed to win it in the upcoming election in the event of a three-cornered fight.

Mahfuz has been coy about his next political move ever since quitting PAS last month.

On Feb 1, he told Malaysiakini that he would make an announcement on his next move in "45 days."
