A PKR lawmaker has urged the organising members of a chess tournament in Putrajaya to be removed for forcing a girl to quit the competition over her attire.

Zuraida Kamaruddin said she was "appalled and disgusted” with the actions of the tournament director and chief arbiter of the National Scholastic Chess Championship 2017.

“I urge the relevant authorities to remove these two incompetent and dirty minded adults from their current positions, and never to let them near girls at all.

“In fact, there should be a court order to ensure that they keep a safe distance away from all girls,” said Zuraida in a statement today.

“Their behaviour is a threat to children, especially girls.”

Coach Kaushal Khandhar who reported the alleged incident on his Facebook said the matter was relayed by the player's mother.

He included a photograph of the girl's knee-length skirt in the post.

“I have been playing chess in Malaysia for almost two decades, and I have never heard this type of issue ever in any tournaments in Malaysia.

“This should be the first and last time this kind of issue ever appears, I or anyone of us should never accept this in our chess community,” he wrote.

Kaushal demanded a public apology from the tournament director within five days, failing which he said they would “have no choice but to resort to legal proceedings”.

According to a report on Malay Mail Online (MMO), a Malaysian Chess Federation spokesperson said the tournament secretariat is currently investigating the incident.

'Belong in a cage'

Zuraida, who is PKR Wanita chief, said the two officials were shameful to “publicly declare that seeing legs over a knee-length skirt is a temptation”.

“How disgraceful! If such men cannot control their urges, they belong behind a cage,” she said, adding that this was not an isolated case.

Previously, SEA Games gymnastics multiple medallist Farah Ann Hadi was in 2015 criticised by some quarters for wearing the traditional gymnastics leotards, claimed to be too revealing.

“If men keep on blaming girls and women for their own inability to remain unaroused, then there is even a greater need to keep a registry of all sexual offenders and potential sexual aggressors like these two.

“Religion teaches us to keep a pure mind. If the mind is not pure, no matter how women dresses, the men would still find reasons to get excited.”
