MUKTAMAR PAS Youth chief Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz highlighted the possibility of the Islamist party amending the syariah enactments in three more states if it wins them in the next general election.

However, the Pasir Mas MP said this would depend on whether the move to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355) is passed in Parliament.

“If it is fated that Act 355 (is passed) in Parliament and PAS succeeds in controlling five states following GE14, we will have the power to amend the syariah enactments at the state level,” he added in his speech at the PAS Youth muktamar in Alor Setar, Kedah, today.

Nik Abduh said PAS Youth is confident, based on their efforts and Allah's divine assistance, that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's aim of winning 40 parliamentary seats and five states would be realised.

Apart from retaining control of Kelantan, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had said the party is also targeting Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor and Kedah.

Following the last general election, PAS currently has 14 seats in Parliament.

The syariah enactments in Kelantan and Terengganu have already been amended.

Hadi's motion on Act 355 was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on April 6, but speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia deferred the debate to the next meeting in July.

Act 355 only serves to regulate the limit of syariah punishments.

However, the implementation is under state control, meaning each state must amend its individual syariah enactment if it wishes to raise the existing punishment cap in accordance with Act 355.

On another matter, Nik Abduh promised more disposable income for Malaysians in PAS Youth's general election manifesto.

"Disposable income – more ringgit in your pockets (is what we promise)," he said, but did not elaborate on how this would be achieved.

The seven-point manifesto unveiled today includes welfare, affordable housing, improving quality of life through education and free transportation.
