NGOs moot review of 1.75m citizenships granted from 1957 to 1970

A newly-formed Malay-Muslim coalition today announced its plans to challenge the process of granting citizenship to about 1.75 million Malaysians who received the status between 1957 and 1970.

Barisan Bertindak Melayu Islam (Bertindak) spokesperson Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz said this was on grounds that the process had allegedly violated the stipulated terms under the Federal Constitution.

"Schedule 1 of the Constitution is in relation to the taking of oath for citizenship. Between 1957 until 1970, 1.75 million citizenships bypassed this process of taking the oath...
