Another suit against PM over 1MDB; Najib readies BN for GE14

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Another suit against Najib over 1MDB

Parti Bebas Rasuah president Ezam Md Noor filed a lawsuit against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and 15 others over alleged US$3.66 billion in losses suffered by 1MDB.

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over claims that former PAS leader Nasharudin Mat Isa received funds linked to SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1MDB.

However, Nasharudin denied receiving the funds and said he was exploring legal action against those who made the allegation.

Rafizi also signed a fresh statutory declaration reiterating that he had not received money from businessman John Soh Chee Wen after PAS leaders made the allegation against him.

Switzerland's Office of Attorney-General (OAG) said it had not received a Mutual Legal Assistance request from Malaysia over the SRC International Investigation.

Najib readies BN for GE14

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak unveiled BN's machinery for the 14th general election.

The prime minister said the general election may be held either this year or next, but BN would win nevertheless.

Najib also squashed speculations about the appointment of Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein as minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of special functions, stating that it was Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's idea.

Zahid said he understood Hishammuddin’s feelings following speculations over his new position as he had experienced the same when he was made deputy prime minister to replace the axed Muhyiddin Yassin.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin dismissed speculations of a rift between Zahid and Hishammuddin, insisting that the special functions minister appointment was purely administrative in nature.

Taxes revoked, taxes imposed

Putrajaya reversed the five percent excise tax hike on multi-purpose vehicles with a cylinder capacity of between 1,000cc and 1,500cc.

The government also imposed new safeguard duties on certain imported steel products, leading to complaints that it could increase the cost of construction, which would be passed on to buyers.

More Kinibites

A 20-year-old man who allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl reportedly said he wanted to marry her, but police said he will not escape punishment.

A written judgment of the Court of Appeal discloses how an Umno division leader had attempted to influence Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to secure projects related to Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

Ampang PKR Youth chief Adam Rosly was remanded five days over an investigation into his wealth.

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's lawyers are expected to file a fresh challenge against his Sodomy II conviction.

The Federal Court ordered an Iranian, who allegedly planned to assassinate Israeli diplomats in Bangkok, to be extradited to Thailand.

Looking ahead

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is set to receive Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito.
