Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said hopes that the Bankruptcy Bill and the Child Sexual Crimes Bill will be given priority over the private member's bill to amend Act 355.

This she said, is because both are important, involve public interest and will affect a lot of people.

"So far we received several bills... we may get more. My (Child) Sexual Crimes Bill, I hope, is number 27, and number 28 for first reading is the Bankruptcy Bill, which is very important to me and I am very passionate about.

"Because if I don't get it out by this session, I have to wait again and a lot of people are affected by all these laws. So I am very, very concerned about that.

"So, for me, I want to settle these first," Azalina told reporters in Parliament House today.

She was asked to respond on whether the private member's bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdictions) Act (Act 355) would be tabled in this parliamentary session.

The motion for the bill to amend Act 355 was tabled by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang on the last day of the parliamentary sitting last year, though the debate on the motion was delayed, it was targeted for this sitting of the House.

Pressed if Hadi's private member's bill will be prioritised by the government like in the previous sitting, Azalina declined to comment.

"I am not the minister-in-charge of Act 355. You need to ask the minister-in-charge," she said.

The bill was listed as the sixth item on the order paper in Parliament today.

There are a total of 39 items for the current Parliament sitting which will take place for 20 days until April 7.
