Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed has reiterated Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah was given the standard treatment while under detention.
"She went through the police usual standard operating procedures (SOP) and this shows that she wasn’t given special treatment,” he was quoted by Free Malaysia Today (FMT) saying.
"If she wants to talk about her experiences during detention, then let her talk about it.
"But she was treated according to police SOP and no differently from other inmates," he said.
Maria had described her detention as a "testing" time after the police interrogated her six to eight hours on a daily basis.
She was made to sleep on a wooden plank in a room with no windows, and made to wear goggles when she left the cell so she had no idea of her whereabouts.
The 60-year-old activist said she wasn't allowed to wear any undergarments.
Nur Jazlan, who is also Umno supreme council member, said Maria was not treated differently from others during interrogation.
Possession of undergarments, belts, ties and any personal items is not allowed for the safety of the inmates, he said.
"Belts and other personal items can be used to injure the inmate physically. You can strangle yourself with an undergarment as it can be made into a rope.
"That’s why the police do not allow these things. The police want to avoid any untoward incidents," he said.
Maria was arrested on Nov 18, on the eve of the Bersih 5 rally.
She was investigated under Section 124C of the Penal Code for engaging in activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy and held under Sosma.
The authorities say her detention concerns funds Bersih, the electoral reform movement, received from the Open Society Foundation (OSF), which is linked to billionaire George Soros.
