UMNO AGM The 14th general election will be held soon, said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak without specifying a date.
In his speech at the Umno general assembly in Kuala Lumpur, he said the contest would determine if Malaysians retain the Umno-led government or chose a new government led by DAP.
Since the imprisonment of former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and PAS withdrawing from the opposition bloc, detractors often claim that DAP is calling the shots in the new alliance, comprising PKR and Amanah.
The predominantly Chinese DAP is also accused of wanting to undermine the position of the Malays and Islam.
DAP leaders have denied this, and blamed Umno for using such labels to sow fear among Muslim voters.
In a bid to convince the Malay electorate, DAP has been recruiting Malays into its fold and fielding them as election candidates.
Najib, who is Umno president, also painted a bleak picture should the Umno-led government fall.
"If only the Malays and the bumiputera know the nightmare that will befall them.
"I am confident they will hold firmly to Umno as the only party that can defend their ancestry's rights and fight for their future," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
Najib said BN’s victory during the Sarawak election as well as the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections would motivate a huge win for Barisan during GE14.
