As the clock ticks down to Bersih 5 on Nov 19, its chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah received another death threat.

This time, images sent to her mobile phone showed the decapitation of Maria, her three sons, Bersih secretariat member Mandeep Singh and Human Rights Society chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan.

The first threat received last month showed pictures of a man dressed in black and wearing a balaclava holding a dagger to the necks of Maria, Mandeep and Ambiga.

Maria, who filed a police report in Ipoh this afternoon, declined to disclose the latest images due to their horrific nature.

“I have not shown the images to my sons. It's horrific for anyone to be so low as to attack us so personally,” she told Malaysiakini.

“(The message was) sent at 12.49am but I only saw it at 4.30am. There was no message this time - just images,” she added.

Last month’s threat had a message stating that it was a warning from “Malaysian Islamic State operatives”.

Bersih 5 will proceed as planned

In a tweet earlier, Maria said the death threat would not intimidate her and Bersih 5 would proceed as planned.

“Our right to assemble is enshrined in Article 10 of the Federal Constitution and that's what we will continue to fight for,” she told Malaysiakini later today.

“The November 19 rally is on and we invite all Malaysians to stand tall with us as we struggle for a new Malaysia.”

Maria does not believe that the latest threat was made by terror group Islamic State (IS).

“It seems to be done by people who do not want us to continue with our rally and convoys,” she said.

Bersih, she added, has been creating waves of excitement through its convoys.

“We have been successful and that's why some people are scared of the people's power.

“Besides, since when did IS care about elections or rallies?” she pointed out.

Nevertheless, Maria urged the police to take the case more seriously and to also arrest the culprits, especially in light of the second threat.
