An operator of an old folks home was fined a total of RM4,000 by the Magistrate's Court in Malacca today for causing hurt on a resident, and failing to register the centre.
Magistrate Analia Kamaruddin fined M Sehgar RM2,000 in default 12 months' jail for causing hurt, and another RM2,000 in default three months' jail for failing to register the centre.
Sehgar, 56, pleaded guilty to both charges.
On the first count, he was charged with hurting Wong Yoke Chan, 75, at the All Mighty Old Folks Home at 7439-C, Jalan Klebang Besar in Malacca at 3pm last Aug 18.
The charge, under Section 323 of the Penal Code, provides for imprisonment of up to a year, or a fine up to RM2,000, or both, if found guilty.
The second count was for failing to register the home, an offence under Section 5 (2) of the Care Centres Act 1993, which provides an imprisonment of up to two years, or fined up to RM10,000, or both, if found guilty.
The prosecution was represented by prosecuting officer Nora Yaacob, while Sehgar was unrepresented.
The police arrested him after a video showing an elderly woman being assaulted went viral on social media.
