YOURSAY | 'This is an issue is public decency, not integrity of gov't or mentality of people.'
Australian gov't won't bail out Sepang racetrack strippers
Gerard Lourdesamy: Perhaps a bunch of intoxicated Malaysian guys ought to strip to their swimwear or underwear with the Australian flag printed on their bottoms during the Anzac Day ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, and then see if the Australians are as tolerant and accepting of such outrageous behaviour in public.
The issue here is public decency and not about the integrity of the Malaysian government or the mentality of our people.
What I have observed during my visits to countries in Southeast Asia, is that some foreigners, while on holiday, have absolutely no respect for, or an understanding of local customs, traditions and sensitivities.
I doubt that they would behave in such a manner in public, in their own countries. But it would seem that their youth, ignorance and zest for life entitles them to behave in such an inappropriate and at times, offensive manner.
Dr Suresh Kumar: What is considered honey for some could well turn out to be poison for others. It may be a harmless prank in Australia but it is not in Malaysia.
When you are in Rome behave like the Romans. This said, I applaud the maturity and sensibility exhibited by the Australian government and its Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop.
Now, compare this with the way our authorities did in initially trying to protect the sex maniac army officer in New Zealand.
We will never get a mature and just government if Malaysians themselves do not change their siege mentality and racist thoughts.
Mamadias: Good for you, minister. This will show your citizens to respect laws of another nation.
All this about a “lapse" in judgement is just a crappy way of defending yourself after doing something stupid. They are adults and must face the consequences.
Abasir: PM Najib Razak had reportedly declared that "hosting the F1 race is good for global exposure". Well, I guess these blokes took him quite literally - the exposure part at least.
In all seriousness though, I must tell these fellows to butt out, since we are very good at getting globally exposed all by ourselves.
OMG!: Feeling outraged by the young Australians wearing Malaysian flag undies to celebrate an Aussie winning the Formula 1 race here?
But not feeling outraged by a leader who shamelessly calls his RM2.6 billion financial peccadillo a “donation”, hence it's okay?
The cockeyed sense of what really counts for some Malaysians is really amazing. Do leaders have to don giant-size undies made of the Malaysian flag before the people feel outraged?
Ace: Yes, much ado about nothing. A stupid prank - and everyone gets worked up. Billions missing and half the population is not interested in catching the thief.
SteveOh: If these Australians do not know how to behave, they will learn the hard way. A stint in a Malaysian jail will teach them that life is not about getting sloshed on alcohol, acting stupid, and making proper fools of themselves.
Drunken revelry may be their perverted idea of fun, but they need to grow up. Alcoholism is a major cause of domestic violence in Australia.
Some years ago, on a MAS flight a group of Australians visiting Malaysia for a Hash Harriers event, drank all the way during the flight from Australia to Malaysia.
Still intoxicated on arrival, one of them jumped on the baggage conveyor belt and made a nuisance of himself. A Malaysian minister suggested the exhibitionist Australians had a political motive.
That's silly. He should know Australians are not politically provocative. Some just act stupid when intoxicated. Keep them in jail for a few days and when sober, they will be perfect gentlemen, unlike some of the peskier leaders of the Red Shirts.
Vent: So they wore swimwear at the F1 races. Okay, let's blame that on the weather. But with the Malaysian flag on their bottoms? Now that's a tad too much for our easily offended sensibilities, mates! And drinking beer from their shoes?
That about says it all. After all, the only civilisation that existed in Australia has already been near decimated by louts like these and their boorish forefathers, many of whom history reminds us were convicts.
A full day in the clink will not only cool them down but may reconnect them to their murky past and hopefully rehabilitate them. "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi, oi, oi"?
Wg321: These nine Australians are very lucky. Hudud laws are yet to be introduced in Malaysia.
Otherwise, they may be whipped at least 40 times each on their buttocks for exposing their aurat.
The Analyser: My guess is that what they did was specifically designed to outrage Malaysia's narrow-minded sensibilities. And they succeeded handsomely.
Heaven forbid that we should have filthy foreigners disrespecting Malaysia. Isn't that role specifically restricted to Malaysians - and they do it much better than a bunch of semi-naked Australians could ever do.
