Former Malacca chief minister Rahim Thamby Chik was today fined RM1,900 by the Sessions Court in Shah Alam for a Facebook comment made on Selangor crown prince Tengku Amir Shah last year.
He can be jailed for three months if he fails to pay the fine.
The sentence was meted out by Sessions Court judge Slamat Yahya after Rahim pleaded guilty to making the comment on Sept 25 last year, Utusan Malaysia reported.
He was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
The maximum sentence for the charge is RM50,000 or a year's jail or both.
On June 7, teenager Muhammad Amirul Azwan Mohd Shakri was sentenced to one year in jail after pleading guilty to 14 counts of making insulting comments against the Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, under the same section of the Act.
The Johor Baru High Court overturned the sentence last week, instead sending Amirul to the Henry Gurney reform school in Pasir Mas, Malacca, until he is 21 years of age.
Yesterday, former journalist Sidek Kamiso was arrested under the Communications and Multimedia Act for a tweet on PAS spiritual leader Haron Dun, who died on Sept 16.
Sidek was released on police bail after the Johor Baru court denied remand.
