Threats by Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos against Anwar Ibrahim's American lawyer Kimberley Motley have sunk the party to a new low, a lawyer said today.
Latheefa Koya, who is also on Anwar's legal team, said this in response to Jamal's threat to stage demonstrations against Motley.
"This is a blatant attempt to intimidate and obstruct Motley from doing her job as an international legal adviser.
"By threatening to protest against her at the Federal Court on Oct 12, Jamal and Umno are undermining the legal system and interfering in the judicial process," Latheefa said in a statement today.
She added that this was further evidence of a political conspiracy against Anwar.
Jamal yesterday urged a rally outside the Federal Court on Oct 12, the day of the review of Anwar's sodomy conviction.
This was in response to Motley's call for the public to attend the review hearing.
Anwar appointed the renowned human rights lawyer to assist in a number of cases, including his review of the February 2015 sodomy conviction.
The former opposition leader has always maintained that the sodomy charge, similar to the first against him in 1999, was fabricated by his political rivals.
However, the government has denied this.
Anwar is currently serving a five-year prison sentence.
