The Catholic Church of Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur today consented to plans to demolish the St Joseph's Chapel in Brehma Estate, by the Kajang municipal council.
This is because the chapel has not been in use since the 1980s, Kuala Lumpur Archbishop Julian Leow said in a statement.
"Unfortunately, there are reports of some people attempting to prevent the demolition work by the council.
"The Archbishop would like to appeal to these individuals to respect the lawful right of the council to carry out its duty, and to remind everyone that the decision to demolish the unused chapel was made after due process was followed," the statement stated.
The chapel was built to cater to estate workers there, but has not been in use since the estate closed.
Most of the chapel structure has crumbled over time and the remains are now deemed to be an illegal structure on a road reserve, the church said.
