The murder of Miri PKR branch secretary Bill Kayong has sent shockwaves across the state.
The 43-year-old, who was Bekenu PKR candidate in the 11th Sarawak state election, was gunned down by an individual using a shotgun while he was waiting in his Toyota Hilux at a traffic light intersection in Lutong, Miri about 8.30 this morning.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) in a statement in Kuching, said it was appalled by the murder and called on the police to bring the culprits to justice.
"This incident (murder) runs contrary to our Sarawakian values of peace and harmony and is strongly condemned.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Barisan Nasional Backbenchers' Club chairperson Abdullah Saidol expressed deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to Kayong's family.
"The evildoers must be brought to justice," said the chief political secretary to the Sarawak chief minister.
PRS president James Jemut Masing wants the perpetrator of this heinous crime to be brought to justice.
"Whatever our (political) differences, no one has the right to take the law into their own hands," he said.
Shocked at killing
In Miri, representatives of state opposition political parties were shocked at the killing with Sarawak PKR chairperson Baru Bian conveying his condolences to the family of the victim, whom he described as very vocal in championing issues on the local community's land rights.
Sarawak PAS commissioner Jofri Jaraiee also expressed his condolences and said Kayong had assisted PAS during the 13th general election in the Sibuti Parliamentary constituency.
"Stern action must be taken against the perpetrators," he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman has set up a special taskforce to investigate the murder of Miri PKR branch secretary Bill Kayong in Sarawak this morning.
Kayong, 43, was the PKR candidate who contested the Bekenu seat in the Sarawak state elections on May 7 was shot dead about 8.30am while in his Toyota Hilux pick-up vehicle at a traffic light junction in Lutong.
Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the taskforce would be led by Sarawak CID chief, SAC Dev Kumar MM Sree Shunmugam.
He said the police would also send CID officers from Bukit Aman to assist the taskforce.
He said the motive behind the death was under investigation and urged the public not to speculate.
Khalid said this at a press conference after the signing of a memorandum of police cooperation with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, National Archives and the Integrity Institute of Malaysia and launching of the Police Code of Ethics, 2016-2020 Integrity Plan and Standard Compliance Manual books at Bukit Aman in Kuala Lumpur today.
Kayong was also Sarawak Dayak Association (Pedas) secretary, which fights for the welfare of the Dayak community.
