Give consumers a one-off bill rebate during this heatwave season, Umno Youth vice-chairperson Khairul Azwan Harun called upon Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) today.
This came after some consumers took to the social media after receiving bill shocks of more than RM100 extra compared with their regular bills, and demanded to know whether TNB had increased its tariff.
TNB in a statement yesterday stressed that its tariff remained unchanged and suggested that the sudden increase in bill may be due to extra electricity consumption during the current hot weather.
Khairul acknowledged this fact, but insisted that the power company does something about the higher bills.
"Surely the rakyat will be using more electricity than usual for electrical appliances, such as air conditioners, fans or even the refrigerator.
x"Umno Youth demands that TNB offers special one-off rebates every month throughout this El Nino season to reduce the rakyat's burden," he said.
Khairul said TNB should not merely look at this from a corporate point of view and make extra profit while the rakyat suffer in the heat.
He said suggestions for consumers to save on electricity at this time would also be untenable due to the hot weather.
"Umno Youth demands that TNB immediately looks into a special rebate formula and mechanism for the interest of the rakyat," Khairul added.
