The Kedah Regency Council has requested a meeting with all state Barisan Nasional assemblymen tomorrow to resolve the current political imbroglio triggered by attempts to remove Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir.
English daily The Sta r quoted sources who said that the three-member Regency Council will meet the assemblypersons individually in order to assess the situation and reach a final solution.
“All 21 Barisan assemblypersons will be summoned, including Mukhriz,” The Star’s report said, adding that the meeting is expected to be held in Alor Setar.
The report also stated that the meeting was necessitated by Mukhriz’s refusal to resign from his post, and so the Regency Council must personally assess whether the majority of BN assemblypersons are in favour of appointing a new menteri besar.
A total of 19 assemblypersons had reportedly signed statutory declarations last week agreeing to the change but it was later alleged some of them may have done so under duress.
Two MCA Kedah state-assemblypersons have also denied signing the SDs.
Kedah Umno deputy chairperson Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah on Jan 20, together with 14 Kedah Umno division chiefs, held a joint press conference in Alor Setar to express their loss of confidence in Mukhriz.
Since then, both Mukhriz and Ahmad Bashah have separately met with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who is also the Umno president. However he has yet to announce any decision on the matter.
Najib on Friday submitted his proposed names for the new Kedah menteri besar during a meeting with the Regency Council.
He was also granted an audience with the Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah on the matter on Wednesday and it had been earlier speculated that the new MB would be sworn in by today.
