Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has refused to take action against Kedah Umno division leaders for demanding the ouster of Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir.
"It does not arise where the Umno secretary-general needs to take disciplinary action against the 14 Kedah Umno division leaders," he said in a statement published on Umno Online .
Tengku Adnan added that the Umno headquarters had taken note of the press conference by the Kedah Umno division leaders which called on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to replace Mukhriz as the menteri besar.
"They had hoped for the Umno president to immediately make changes for the continuity of Umno and the interest of the people of Kedah," he said.
Tengku Adnan's statement came hours after a group of Umno grassroots leaders, who were disciplined for calling Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to resign, urged the party to take similar action against those rebelling against Mukhriz.
The Umno grassroots leaders, who were slapped with a six-year suspension, submitted a memorandum to the Umno headquarters today, calling for the same punishment to be imposed on the 14 Umno division leaders.
"There cannot be a double standard when taking action (against Umno members)," Gabungan Ketua Cawangan Umno Malaysia spokesperson Kamarul Azman Habibur Rahman had said today.
