Amanah behind Harapan despite meagre councillor seats

Parti Amanah Negara said it remains committed to Pakatan Harapan despite only being granted less than a quarter of the local council seats it was seeking for in the Selangor government.

Selangor Amanah chief Izham Hashim thanked the Selangor government for allowing the party to play a role in the local government.

However, Izham said Amanah will continue to negotiate to ensure the state government makes the "right" decision.

"Selangor Amanah will continue negotiating with the leadership of the Pakatan harapan government to ensure the decision made is right and appropriate, to ensure Harapan is strong and stable in Selangor," he said in a statement today.

Earlier, Selangor state executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah announced that Amanah would only get eight local council seats instead of the 34 the party was seeking.

Resolved at state exco meeting

The eight seats were allocated to Amanah following consensus by PKR, PAS and DAP, said Ean Yong who is in charge of local government, new village development and factory legalisation.

The question surrounding Amanah's quota had been resolved at the state exco meeting chaired by Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali today, he added.

"It is not important which party or parties have surrendered their seats to Amanah but the state government has settled it," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian .

Following this, Amanah will have representatives in Sepang, Kuala Langat, Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor and Kuala Selangor, he said.

Ean Yong, who is also Seri Kembangan state assemblyperson, also said the list of all the 286 councillors for Selangor has almost been finalised with only two more seats, which belong to PKR and DAP, yet to be decided.

Amanah Hulu Kelang assemblyperson Saari Sungip was previously reported as saying that the party was hopeful the state government would accede to its request for the appointment of 34 representatives in Selangor's 12 local councils.

"Our existing quota is 13 local councillors. We have requested for 34 local councillors to be appointed but the minimum is 24 with two in each council," he said.

Selangor PAS welcomed the new Amanah councillors, thanking Azmin that none of their seats had to be given up to accommodate the splinter party.

Though it said that while it would recognise the new councillors it still will not have ties with Amanah which is seen as being traitors to the Islamic party.

Central PAS however seem to have no qualms in 'advising' Malay party Umno that once stabbed it in the back, though stopped short at loose cooperation and have vowed not to join the party in the ruling coalition.
