Umno Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah at one point accepted PAS’ offer before the 13th general elections to become prime minister if Pakatan Rakyat won the election, revealed former PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali.
However according to Mustafa, due to objections from PKR that insisted its de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim become the prime minister, PAS finally accepted PKR’s decision based on the Pakatan spirit.
He added that Tengku Razaleigh was ready to quit Umno in order to become the prime minister after the elections.
The PAS election director told a press conference in Kuala Terengganu yesterday that its initial plan was to let Tengku Razaleigh become prime minister for three years if Pakatan won the election, then hand over the position to Anwar till the next general elections.
According to a Sin Chew Daily report, PAS preferred Tengku Razaleigh to become prime minister because he has strong Malay support that can help Pakatan to attract more Malay votes, said Mustafa.
“We made the suggestion to Tengku Razaleigh and he agreed to it. We then brought the matter to DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang, where he said DAP has no objection if Anwar agreed.”
He added that those leaders involved in the meeting including the late PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat, Haron Din, party president Hadi Awang , then-deputy president Mohamad Sabu, PKR’s Anwar, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution.
“PKR replied to us two to three weeks after the said meeting, rejecting our suggestion and insisting that Anwar become prime minister. We respected PKR’s decision and cancelled the plan.”
He emphasised that Hadi has never opposed Anwar becoming prime minister but had only suggested that Tengku Razaleigh and Anwar take turns to be prime minister.
He then urged Lim to stop telling lies against Hadi that the latter was against Anwar becoming prime minister.
