PAS leaders in the Pakatan-led Penang and Selangor governments have been told not to “rush” to quit their posts following this weekend’s muktamar motion to sever ties with DAP.
“There is no need to rush to act ahead of the leadership,” said Ulama wing information chief Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali ( photo ) in a statement this morning.
He explained that the motion has not been decided upon, and that what was approved was merely the decision to leave the motion to the party leadership to make up its mind.
“When the motion was decided to be accepted without debate at the PAS muktamar […], it means, to approve that the motion be decided by the syura council and PAS central committee.
“It doesn’t mean we have passed the motion to let the muktamar decide on the party’s relationship with DAP,” he laboured to explain.
“Therefore I call on the PAS leadership in Penang and Selangor not to be influenced by the provocation of (Penang chief minister) Lim Guan Eng that the PAS leaders in Penang quit their posts in the Penang government.
“Leave it to Lim will all his powers to do whatever his party wishes,” he said.
Mat Sabu takes lead
Lim yesterday responded to PAS' motion to sever ties with DAP saying it would mean PAS representatives have no choice but to resign from the Penang state government and its agencies, out of ethics.
"Whilst I enjoy friendly and good working relations with many PAS representatives, I understand they would have to resign for ethical and moral reasons," the chief minister commented.
Meanwhile at the muktamar yesterday defeated ex-PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu took the lead to announce he would resign from his Penang posts in a week, in accordance with the party's pending decision to cut ties with DAP.
"If I don't obey, they will say I'm not obeying the ulamas," he said sarcastically.
Penang has roughly 100 PAS members in various state positions from the government to the local councils and related bodies.
However, no other post holders have followed Mohamad Sabu's footsteps.
Meanwhile Selangor PAS said they have no problems staying in the Pakatan government.
Selangor PAS deputy chief Iskandar Abdul Samad reiterated that it is up to the syura council and PAS central committee to decide on the party’s relations with DAP.
“I am confident that the discussion would take account of all factors. I am also confident that the views and experience of state-level PAS would also be taken account,” he said yesterday.
He pointed out for example that PAS has no issues with its Pakatan Rakyat allies in Selangor, whether it comes to administering the state, or beyond.
