As finance minister, the 1Malaysia Development Bhd buck stops at Najib Abdul Razak, and so he should be sacked along with the state investment firm’s board of directors, PAS said.
PAS vice-president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said this after a video of Muhyiddin calling for the sacking of 1MDB board members uploaded online made waves today.
"Muhyiddin’s move to blame the 1MDB board of directors without linking Najib is Umno’s short cut to find a scapegoat.
"1MDB is wholly-owned by the Finance Ministry, so whatever decisions made by the board cannot have been made without the knowledge of the ministry, headed by Najib," he said in a statement.
As such, he urged 1MDB directors to come forward to "tell all before it is too late".
Tuan Ibrahim said ministry backing allowed 1MDB to buy prime land for the Tun Razak Exchange and Bandar Malaysia projects for cheap from the government, and obtain government guaranteed bonds.
So the finance ministry, and thus Najib, cannot say they have little dealings with 1MDB.
Najib, who is also prime minister and chairperson of the 1MDB board of advisors, earlier said 1MDB's business decisions are made by its top management.
"Did 1MDB (do everything) on their own? No one will believe this to be so," he said.
In the leaked video depicting a closed-door meeting between Muhyiddin and the Umno grassroots in Pahang last week, the deputy prime minister says the authorities must wait no longer.
"We have to take action, we cannot be, 'Nevermind, give a bit more time'. No!" Muhyiddin says, exasperatedly.
The event was believed to have taken place at Umno's training centre in Janda Baik, Pahang, last Saturday, just a day after 1MDB urged the public to wait for the outcome of the Auditor-General Department's audit.
"We request that no one should prejudge the matter without thorough facts, ahead of the reviews being made public," 1MDB earlier said in a statement.
This was echoed by Najib on Sunday, a day after Muhyiddin's speech in Janda Baik, through his ' frequently asked questions ' article posted on his blog.
"It is unfair for certain politicians to convict the government in the court of public opinion before the facts are presented by the authorities, which are the auditor-general and bi-partisan Public Accounts Committee," Najib said.
The seven-minute video was uploaded yesterday by former New Straits Times editor Firdaus Abdullah.
The video appeared to have diverted attention from Parliament today, where Najib presented the 11th Malaysia Plan.
Parliament reporters swarmed Muhyiddin about the leaked video, which he confirmed to be authentic.
