Kangkung-theme flash mob organiser Machang Bubuk assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon has received a letter from the police asking him to record his statement over the event held to protest at price hikes in the country.

Lee said he received the letter, which was handed over to his service centre, at about 4-5pm yesterday.

“I was asked to give my statement tomorrow under Section 111 of the Criminal Procedure Code, for criminal defamation,” Lee ( right ) told Malaysiakini .

“I will cooperate fully with the police, they are just doing their job, but I hope they will do their job fairly,” he added.

The letter was handed over to his service centre by Seberang Perai Tengah senior investigation officer Hasan Mohd Salleh.

Lee said he was told that so far, 10 police reports have been lodged against him.

He added that he will have his statement recorded at about 2.30pm tomorrow.

Lee found himself in a major controversy after his flash mob last Friday, where bundles of kangkung were fed into a replica of Prime Minister Najib Razak, irked Umno and Malay NGO members.

Lee said his team was merely protesting against Najib’s speech in Kemaman, Terengganu last week, where he questioned why there were no thanks to the government when prices of good had reduced, like the kangkung (water spinach).

Lee denied ever insulting Najib or the Malays, saying the flash mob was merely meant to highlight the issue of price hikes of essential goods which have burdened the rakyat.

Pro-Najib supporters held two rallies on Saturday at the Seberang Jaya Sunway Carnival Mall and on Sunday in Alma to denounce Lee for allegedly being rude and insulting to the PM and to the Malay community.

The rally on Sunday, involving about 300 people from NGOS like Perkasa, Pekida and the Penang Malay Congress turned rowdy and two unknown men were attacked, allegedly for uttering racist words.

The group targetted their anger at DAP and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, cautioning against a repeat of the racial riots of May 13, 1969.

Despite being asked to apologise to avert a May 13-like riot even by DAP senior leader Lim Kit Siang, Lee had refused to bow to his opponents.
