The acclaimed but controversial film 'The Wolf of Wall Street' has reportedly been banned in Malaysia due to explicit content and language.

"Sources within Malaysia's government film office told THR that the distributor of the film realised upon screening it that it would face huge problems with the censorship board because of its profanity, nudity and sex," reported entertainment site The Hollywood Reporter .

The film is produced by Red Granite Pictures, a company co-owned by Riza Aziz ( far left ) who is the son of Rosmah Mansor, wife of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

The Hollywood film, directed by Martin Scorsese, had its lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio winning the best actor award under the comedy and musical category at the 71st Golden Globes last Sunday.

Red Granite Pictures president of International Christian Mercuri was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter as saying that the film's content had been problematic for certain regions.

"Some of the content in the film makes it difficult in certain territories where they have censorship and can even ban films," he was quoted as saying.

"You try to make a film for a worldwide audience. This is a spectacular movie, all three hours of it. It's a shame that certain countries don't allow art to be screened in its entirety," he added.

The movie, which is a contender for this year's Academy Awards , has set the all-time record for the most F-word in a R-rated film. According to Variety , the F-word is uttered 506 times in the movie, or 2.81 times per minute.

Red Granite Pictures had allowed cuts to certain contents in the film in order to pass through the censorship process in several countries.

For example, The Hollywood Reporter reported that in order for the movie to gain access in India, three scenes were omitted - namely a gay orgy, a public masturbation and another scene of DiCaprio blowing cocaine into a woman's buttocks.

To date, the film has grossed a whopping US$80 million in the United States and US$40 million internationally.
