MCA needs a shot of political viagra, says Najib

Ferdtan: It is tasteless for a leader, a prime minister at that, to joke crudely at the host's expense who invited him as a guest in the MCA general assembly.

Chua Soi Lek is the president of MCA and as host; traditionally he invited BN president Najib Razak as a special guest speaker. Najib insensitively used the word 'political viagra' as an example to instil the fighting spirit among MCA members knowing well the taboo word has connotation to the MCA president's sex scandal.

Though the word by itself meant nothing, it alluded to Chua's weakness for the flesh. Since the crowd laughed knowingly, the pun was not lost.

We don't care about Chua's reputation (or the MCA's) as he was caught literally with his pants down. However, the point here is sensitivity to another's feeling.

How can Najib jab at Chua in front of a few thousands of his fellow members, with a joke like that? Is this the usual Umno portrayal of it superiority? Or its stupidity? Just take the reverse and see how Najib would react?

God forbid if Chua were to make a similar joke on Najib (no way!) in front of Umno delegates using such inconsequential words - again by itself harmless - a Mongolia lady or C4? There is no need to say "Altantuya" but we all know what that means.

Kawak: This is the first PM of Malaysia ever to use sexual intonations in many of his important speeches. It is not what you eat that reflects the spirituality of man but what foul comes out of the mouth.

It is really unbelievable that the PM can say that Umno should not do things that will hurt the Chinese when he himself, some Umno leaders at all levels including some Malay NGOs are the culprits.

He just keeps dead silent when these people are inciting racial and religious sentiments against the non-Malays.

Jeremy Ng: No amount of viagra will rejuvenate MCA if its leadership's political spirit is not in line with the Chinese public interest. And to uphold this principle, the leadership must be sincere and be corruption free.

The newly elected top leaders have too much baggage to fight without fear or favour within BN. Najib is totally right that to say that MCA is only 'flesh' but 'soulless'.

In the eyes of the Chinese, MCA is strategically stupid in only knowing how to attack opposition, in particular DAP, whenever DAP raises matters that are of concern to the race.

Frankly, the rejuvenation of MCA does not depend on Viagra but on a heavy dosage of righteousness in the interest of not only the Chinese but also all Malaysians.

Without this, more Viagra will make the flesh even more 'soulless'. MCA must eradicate its 'running dog' tag to be of any use to the Chinese.

Faz: It is really the blind leading the blind. The 'raison d'etre' of MCA, MIC and to a certain extent, of Umno, haves evaporated due to the changing demand of the respective communities.

These political entities fail to live up to the new political realities, and no matter how much coaxing the 'big brother' is going to do, the end result will be almost the same.

People are abandoning them in droves because the hegemony of master-slave is still deep-rooted and is not going away. The new key words are no corruption, transparent and fair for all.

Swipenter: These good for nothing sex-crazed Umno leaders cannot help themselves with giving statements without any sexual connotation.

Onyourtoes: This how serious our politicians look at problems and challenges confronting this country - grandmother, grandfather, women are like property, make-up, have three more vacancies and now need Viagra to make it work.

MCA, please be honest enough to tell Umno that you are losing ground because of Umno's racist stance, pure and simple.

Cala: Is 'political viagra' a cure-all medicine? What is the real cause-effect of MCA's downfall? Opposite to Najib's prescription that a sick MCA can be resuscitated by 'political viagra', the real panacea points to the "evil doctor" himself.

From history, one learns (Faaland et al, 1990; Snodgrass, 1980) that culturally the Chinese are different from the Malays. Mahathir once argued that the Chinese have the advantage of 5,000 years of civilisation while the Malays have only 400 years.

By right a progressive nation-state can be forged ahead if only the economically dominant- majority (the Chinese), and the politically dominant-majority (the Malays) cooperate with one another (see Amy Chua, 2003).

But no. The continuation of NEP in the post 1990s will only segregate further their people. To put the blame on MCA for losing the Chinese support in the 505 general election is frivolous.

The real culprit lies in the regime, not in the MCA, and certainly not such a vague term 'political viagra'.

Sirach: After the misogynistic statement from a minister a couple of days back, does Najib really have to evoke sex (viagra) to make a point?

What a poor choice of metaphor for someone who tries so desperately to appear statesman-like, especially when overseas. Najib gives out the vibes of someone not at ease with himself.

As for the MCA, whatever advice given will be akin to flogging a dead horse. The party is history - anyone with an ounce of political nous knows that.
