YOURSAY 'Bring down the price of new cars first. Middle-class Malaysians are forced into a corner and now even the corner is being attacked.'
Tee Yong: Ditch burdensome lifespan policy for cars
Shamu99: Even with the present laws and Puspakom checks, there are buses and trucks on the streets that are unsafe.
Don't just blame the vehicles, I dare say most accidents are caused not by the age of the cars but the way people drive, reckless drivers, road conditions, speeding, etc. What is the government doing about it?
With no penalty points system, people don't even bother paying summonses and the police reward those who refuse to pay by announcing discount on these summonses.
Mana ada (where got) system? I hope we put a stop to this dumb idea of retiring 12-year-old cars and instead enforce all the regulations that we have, corruption-free.
P Dev Anand Pillai: Perhaps the proponent of this dumb idea should also consider shooting all those in the cabinet who are above 60, who may be "too old" to serve any more.
A car is a machine, if a machine is well-maintained, it will work. Instead of coming out with ideas of how public transportation can be improved, we have leaders who take aim at machines instead of its handlers, the humans.
Sell this idea to the pakcik in the kampung, let's see if he buys it. Even if you give him a 20-year vehicle loan, that poor person will be burdened for life paying off his debt, instead of having some good years debt-free.
Gotcha: My Proton Perdana is 16 years old. I take good care and do regular maintenance. I dare to challenge and say my car is better than a five-year old car.
If the 12-year lifespan policy comes into effect, Malaysians will have to pay their car loan till their last breath. Retired people and pensioners will not be able to drive cars as getting loans for them will be a great problem due to no income.
Dark Knight: Has the government lost its conscience? Malaysians, especially the middle-ncome group and the poor, are now - just after the general election - being hit with subsidy cuts, price increases, inflation, and other predicaments beyond their control.
This 12-year lifespan policy is surely adding salt to unbearable wounds.
Kgen: Malaysians keep their cars for umpteen years due to the high price of new cars. If they want to impose 12-year lifespan policy, bring down the price of new cars first.
Middle-class Malaysians are forced into a corner and now even the corner is being attacked.
Real Truth: It would be a great idea if the government abolishes all taxes and duties on cars, so that car prices would be about one-third of what we pay today.
If a car cost RM80,000, after abolishing taxes and duties it would cost about RM35,000. Now it is possible to discard it after 10 or 12 years in service. So please consider this proposal as we would save lives and money.
How much was promised by car manufacturers to the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (Miros) for coming out with this stupid idea.
It is akin to saying that people who are not productive after 65 years should be culled since they would be a great burden on the healthcare budget.
Peacemaker: MCA Young Professionals Bureau chief Chua Tee Yong should have extended the life-span limit to five years for BN ministers. Or change them like diapers, when they get dirty.
Dswami: First get the government to start scrapping all the military vehicles that are over 12 years old as they comprise 70 percent of the total number of vehicles, followed by those in the police force.
After that replace all old government vehicles - from ambulances to Indah Water lorries. Then all aircraft from the Air Force, Army and the Police.
Once you have scrapped them, we will discuss about scrapping our cars. Mind you, only discuss.
Interested bystander: Thirteen years and you are out is an absurd policy for automobiles. My car is 26 years old and is doing fine.
Fair Play: I notice that of late Chua Jr's profile has been raised considerably in the media. No doubt, Chua Sr is preparing his son for better things to come in the MCA annual general meeting (AGM) next month.
Wt TNB: I wouldn't mind changing a car every 12 years providing that the government takes back 100 percent of the duties for my car.
Daim urges abolishing open APs for cars
Onyourtoes: Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, we not only want Approved Permits (APs) removed, we want restitution. We want all undeserved profits of AP kings returned to the government to compensate all car owners for the past 30 years, how about it?
And we want independent power producers (IPPs) to do the same, how about it? Reform and restructuring my posterior; if Umno can effect change, the sky will fall.
If we have Chua Tee Yong telling us don't retire the cars after 12 years because car loans for most people is nine years, what does that tell us? It means car prices are too high, income too low or both.
I can also talk like Daim, it is that simple, nothing difficult. Contrary to general belief, the BN government is the greatest cause of income inequality in this country, not education, not employment and not business opportunities.
Truth Really Hurts: Do away with open APs? It's not going to happen. Umno Baru-putera warlords will not go down without a fight.
Gggg: Tell me which beggar will say "No" to free cash.
6th Generation Immigrant: Just close down Proton, and we shall for sure stop Malaysia from bleeding while the collected taxes will not be wasted on an ailing Proton and Dr Mahathir Mohamad's impossible dream.
The saved taxes can be used for endless possibilities. The trouble is that no one is willing to stand up against Mahathir while the Proton "saga" has been draining our taxes for too long.
