Much ado about Penang CM's illegally-parked car

YOURSAY 'The law is applicable to all. I am sure the driver should have learnt by now of the high expectations of his boss. He should not put his boss in trouble.'

Photo of CM Lim's illegally parked car goes viral

your say Joker: Robberies, rapes and murders occurred in Malaysia and a great many of them remained unsolved, their perpetrators went unpunished. Do we then say these criminals are a 'privileged' lot or do we look at improving the enforcement part?

Do we complain as loudly when we see parents double and triple park along Jalan Syed Putra/Federal Highway while waiting to pick up their children from school?

Also, did Penang CM Lim Guan Eng ask his driver to wait for him there or was it the driver's own decision to park illegally so that it will be more convenient for him to later pick up his boss?

The Facebook photograph at most makes for amusing coffee table gossip, and I'm sure we have more serious 'crimes' to harp on instead.

Onyourtoes: Leaders have responsibilities, but they also have privileges. I don't mind at all leaders are given certain privileges just like our PM and DPM are given outriders to get to their destinations faster and quicker even though we sometimes wonder there was indeed such an urgency.

I think we are missing the forest for the trees here. May be there is nothing more fatal than illegal parking that you can find on LGE. Yes, that is who we are - we just can't look at the big picture and we simply yearn for that utopian equality which does not exist.

Why are we hypocritically accepting all the abuse of privileges enjoyed by BN leaders but is quick to nitpick on LGE? This is what nincompoops do.

What privilege does LGE have when compared with other heads of government at the state level? That Mercedes is more than 15 years old.

The Sarawak CM uses a Rolls Royce, in case you have not noticed. But I do know these are not excuses for LGE to violate any law or regulation.

Adsertor: For heaven's sake, Lim is not the driver. However, it will be gracious of him if he apologised for this lapse by his chauffeur.

Sali Tambap: At least acknowledge that this CM travels in economy class and has breakfast at coffee shop. I support a humble person like this. As for the illegal parking, it is not illegal if the driver is in the car.

MockingYou: The last time I checked, a stationary car with the driver in it is a parked car. Don't talk about making Penang the mirror image of Singapore if such "trivial" matter should be/can be overlooked as it gives licence to commit bigger offences.

Old Timer: Guan Eng, just say "sorry", pay the fine and make sure it does not happen again. There are too many big issues to talk about. Don't waste your time and everybody's time on this.

Frankly, your driver could have gone elsewhere to park and wait for you. Your PR (public relations) person should advise you better than to allow you to make such trivial statements and give you bad publicity which detracts from the good work that you are doing.

Mountain Out Of Molehill: What is the big deal? So his driver was in the car waiting for him though it may be a no-waiting zone.

Did the CM abuse his position to stop the enforcement officer issuing a summon? Let's be fair. His driver is also human. Fine him if he is caught. It is not that the CM has asked him to flout the law purposely.

Hcleong: The law is applicable to all. I am sure the driver should have learnt by now of the high expectations of his boss. He should not put his boss in trouble.

What is so difficult to park at a right place and wait for LGE's phone call to fetch him? I believe LGE is not taking advantage of his position. It will be good he leads by example.

Wira: Two hundred plus comments in Malaysiakini for such a triviality involving the driver of the chief minister.

Next time, whack his mother for bringing up a son who allows his driver to do an illegal parking. Not that this had not happened with the BN-run government.

ZZZ: A fellow commenter said this is "petty and not newsworthy." I actually disagreed. When you see news of such nature being reported in online and printed media, you know that BN has really run out of more important thing to whack Pakatan Rakyat, so they have to resort to such pettiness.

Any regular person with common sense can see through such pettiness, which will result in more lost vote for BN. Bear in mind, you and I don't matter anymore. It is the one or two million new young voters that Pakatan must get.

So, bring in on, I said, show the young voters how silly you are.

Anonymous #25595435: Why so much fuss about the Penang CM's car being parked illegally? He is being driven around in an old Mercedes and he does not use outriders.

So, why aren't you guys talking about this? Leave him alone to do his job. He is our favourite CM and he needs to be everywhere all the time.

Dpillai: Having read the comments to this article, I'm astonished at the amount of blind support for the CM. I too voted for DAP and am very proud of it and of Penang, but I just cannot tolerate such nonsensical statement by our leaders.

I expect a higher standard from CAT (Competency, Accountability and Transparency) government. The CM's attempt to justify his driver's conduct is unacceptable. His driver could have easily driven away and come back later when the CM had finished his lunch/entertaining his guest.

There must be leadership by example. Being the CM, this is not a trivial matter and I thank Malaysiakini for highlighting it.

Changeagent: It is official - LGE is the among the cleanest politicians in Malaysia.

His worst crime is double-line parking, not getting kickbacks from submarine deals, raping a Malaccan teenager, stealing National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) funds to purchase super-condominiums or killing a Mongolian woman.
