Malay NGOs defend ex-judge, criticise Malaysiakini

Vijay47: Going against the grain of the comments here, I must state that Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS) is right - Malaysiakini has been remiss in the manner it reported on the forum where former Court of Appeal judge Mohd Noor Abdullah gave a speech worthy of his expertise as a former judge.

Firstly, Malaysiakini had intruded into the forum and that immediately confirms that its coverage of the event would be inaccurate.

Secondly, having now the benefit of comparing the original article and the present one based on the GPMS statement, anyone will see the many areas where Malaysiakini strayed from the truth.

I am disappointed in you, Malaysiakini , for your poor journalistic standards, at least in this issue. Your first report suggested that Mohd Noor's vision is only clouded by racist tendencies. Reading the GPMS response, I can see the real Mohd Noor.

Malaysiakini , why were you so kind towards him in the first article? Why did you not paint him in his true colours - that of a ranting dangerous lunatic out to cause serious social upheavals? Bad dog, you, Malaysiakini .

Dr No: GPMS does not deny that those sentences reported by Malaysiakini were uttered, right? It is effectively saying that there were other parts of the speech that was perhaps not so racist.

So, if a whole speech consists of "racist" component and "non-racist" component, the whole speech is therefore not "racist"?

Anonymous #44199885: It is quite easy to resolve the controversy surrounding the ex-judge's speech; simply release the full version of the speech for all to see and judge.

In any event, as to the ex-judge's question on the economic woes of the Malays, why does he not direct it at Umno?

As the dominant party in government they should have detailed answers on why the Malays lag behind the other ethnic communities who pay taxes but get almost nothing in return, and even vernacular schools are privately funded. The only exception is equal access to healthcare at government-run hospitals.

Otherwise, non-bumiputeras have had to work hard and smart to get by. Nothing is handed down to us. Bumiputeras have significant advantages in securing places of learning, scholarships, housing, discounts on home purchases even those in the luxury category, government and government-linked company (GLC) jobs and contracts.

On what basis should there be a demand that non-bumiputeras should vote only for BN?

CHKS: Give us the full text, better still, a video recording of the full speech. There are certain phrases and sentences that should be interpreted within its proper context.

But in the case of this ex-judge, it is plain and obvious even in the absence of any known context because there cannot be another meaning to what he said.

Let's everyone re-read the few sentences that have been quoted verbatim by Malaysiakini and see whether it has a second meaning?

Don't give excuses, please. The only way for you to refute this is if Malaysiakini did write something and claimed they are your sentences when in fact you did not utter those racist statements, in which case, it amounts to slander. Did Malaysiakini slander you?

Aries46: Release the unabridged text in order to gauge the non-racist nature of his speech. Mohd Noor in basing his speech on the constitution does not automatically preclude it being racist or seditious.

For instance, his proposal to deny the PM's and MB's position to the non-Malays is not a provision in the constitution thus rendering his claim untenable. His foray into Malays Reserve land, Article 153 and his crass comments on grabbing political power and Malays need to raise up to protect these rights are provocative.

The non-Malays have little to do with these as it is Umno who holds power and the benefactor of the NEP over the last 40 plus years.

Even the 10 richest men being non-Malays is a fallacy as there are many Malays whose wealth is said to be unaccountable but anyway these elitists have little to do with the reality on the ground where the average Malaysian slogs and struggles to put food on the table and send the children to school. So what is Mohd Noor's point?

Mahashitla: If parts of the speech were provocative and seditious in nature, which were likely to pit one race against the other, then Mohd Noor should be held accountable for sedition.

GPMS shouldn't be using other claims of constructive criticisms to gloss over his seditious statements and blamed Malaysiakini for highlighting them. Najib has already pledged that he is a PM for all and will tackle racism and extremism in any form.

Mohd Noor is a learned person and holding high positions in public offices and his speech has drawn much applause from the audience consisting mainly of Malays. Will he be gentleman enough to apologise to Najib and all Malaysians for voicing such perverted views, which have caused anger to rise on both sides.

Mohd Noor is an ex-judge and I don't see why he should be defended by GPMS. Will he come out openly and deny what was said by Malaysiakini and that it was a spin. Otherwise he should follow Perkasa leader Zulkifli Noordin to issue an apology to the whole nation.

It is unbelievable that an ex-judge could have come out with such perverted views, especially when Najib's plate was already filled with the ill-advised Chinese tsunami comment, when in actual it was a Malaysian tsunami.

Trublumalaysian: The Malays effectively control the rights to all the lands and all other natural resources in this country. They control all government institutions, GLCs and state-owned companies. The Malays dominate the lawmaking process in Malaysia.

The Malays control the decision-making process in formulating the country's economy policies. The Malays own the largest national assets and the Malays are given discounted shares in the public-listed companies.

The Malays have also been given all kind of perks when it comes to buying properties, awarding of public contracts, tertiary education opportunities, awarding of scholarships and even getting a job in government departments.

With all these privileges and rights enjoyed by the Malays, you are saying that nothing has been done enough to help the Malays to catch up with other races?

Have you ever thought of the fact that after 30 years of implementing the New Economic Policy (NEP), why it has not achieved the desired results? Three words - Umno, cronyism and nepotism.

Bamboo: There's no free lunch in this world. Everyone needs to work for their own keep. Don't blame the uneven distribution of wealth on the Chinese. Blame it on the nepotism and cronyism of BN.
