The new law governing the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) is to be tabled at the next session of the Dewan Rakyat, Deputy Home Minister Lee Chee Leong said in Alor Setar.
The ministry is still discussing the matter with the attorney-general, he told reporters after the presentation of honorary Rela ranks in Alor Setar yesterday evening.
Rela was established under the Emergency Ordinance which has since been repealed.
Lee said there are almost three million Rela members throughout the country, but added that non-Malays only comprise less than 30 percent of the corps.
As such, he said, the ministry would encourage more non-Malays to join the corps to reflect the 1Malaysia population.
