Pakatan Rakyat has urged the federal authorities to solve the flood situation in Klang, Selangor, as the city was badly hit by floods this morning from heavy rains starting around four in the morning.

“Klang is badly hit by floods this morning. The federal Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) must do something because the bulk of allocations are with them.

“Don't victimise Pakatan state and local governments,” wrote Selangor speaker Teng Chang Khim this morning on Twitter .

NONE The Chinese language media this morning reported heavy rain starting around midnight wreaking havoc in the coastal city, in what was dubbed the most serious flooding in Klang’s history.

“I woke up to a flooded living room. The flood outside is reaching knee-level,” a resident in one of the affected areas, Taman Melawis, told Malaysiakini this morning.

According to various media reports, some low-lying areas were hit by waters as high as 1.3m, submerging cars and causing massive traffic jams in the vicinity.

Some of the worst-hit areas reported included Bukit Tinggi, Pandamaran, Taman Chi Liung, and Southern Park, Klang Utama.

NONE In Klang Utama, residential as well as industrial areas and shoplots were inundated.

A report in The Star said other areas affected were Taman Sri Andalas, Taman Selatan, Taman Bayu Perdana, Taman Sentosa, Taman Sg Ujong, Taman Palmgrove and

Padang Jawa.

10 schools were reported to have closed, some for the entire day.

Among the schools affected were SMK La Salle, SRK Simpang Lima,

Sekolah Teknik Batu Ujong and Hin Hua High School.

The English daily also called the deluge the "worst in 40 years".

Clogged drains blamed

Selangor education director Abdullah Mat Yunus said the schools cancelled their morning sessions while other schools closed for the entire day, reports Bernama .

NONE “SM Tengku Ampuan Rahimah was one of the schools that had to be closed for the entire day because flood waters were knee-deep in the area,” he said when contacted.

Asked if the 10 schools would conduct extra classes over the weekend, he said it was up to the Education Ministry to decide.

Kota Alam Shah assemblyperson M Manoharan said floods were an ongoing problem in most parts of Klang and urged the state government to come up with drastic measures to solve their woes.

“In most places like Taman Bayu Perdana, the floods are in fact, due to garbage clogging the drains," he said when met by Bernama at Taman Bayu Perdana in Klang.

He said this morning’s flash floods left the Arunamari Specialist Medical Centre at Taman Bayu Perdana inundated.
