Deputy Education Minister Wee Ka Siong said the police should have talked to him and other witnesses first before jumping to conclusions.

Wee was responding to reports in the vernacular newspapers quoting Selangor police chief (CPO) Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah as saying that no one at the rally organised by Chinese education group Dong Zong at New Era College in Kajang was assaulted.

“I’m puzzled by the Selangor CPO’s comments. I didn’t lodge a police report, so how can they come to a conclusion on the matter without interviewing me or my bodyguard,” he said at a press conference at the Parliament lobby.

“The rakyat want the police to be more professional. I urge the police to be more professional before coming to conclusions,” said Wee.

Normally, the police would initiate investigations only when a complaint is lodged, said Wee, and consult all parties before coming to a decision.

NONE However, despite the assertion of the police that no person attending the rally was attacked, Wee is adamant that he was almost struck with a blow at the rally.

“When I walked in (to the place), there were no police guarding me. Immediately, those who were there started closing in, that was when about 10 police personnel formed a human chain on the left and the right.

“It is not possible for them to conclude that nothing happened unless there was a helicopter capturing what happened on video from above.

“How do you define assault? When there is an apparent bruise or bleeding? I was not injured, but I saw a fist coming towards me but I moved and I just felt a touch,” Wee told reporters.

“I'm not sure if the CPO was misquoted but the police will thoroughly investigate if I had lodged a report. I still give them the benefit of the doubt,” he said.

He reiterated that although he can identify the person who had allegedly tried to punch him, he will not lodge a police report.

Another reason why Wee decided not to pursue the matter was because in order for allegations of assault to “hold water” in court there has to be evidence to show injury.

“I’m a man of principles, I didn’t lodge the complaint although Pakatan MPs insisted I do so. I attended the function because I wanted to listen to their concerns, not to draw attention on the sidelines,” he said.

“Don’t try to legitimise the wrong that was done,” reminded Wee, as photographs of newspapers and plastic water bottles thrown at him during the melee, were also published in several dailies.

He added that if the police had come to the conclusion based on their limited resources at that point of time, he could accept the rationale.
