Attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail today evaded reporters’ questions on whether his office will file a notice of appeal against Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's acquittal last Monday.

NONE The AG instead preferred to discuss a fishing trip, the Chinese New Year holidays and the weekend rather than entertain media questions on Anwar.

"Today is Saturday, tomorrow is Sunday, and soon it is the Chinese New Year and let us entertain our Chinese guests... and go fishing," he said when mobbed by reporters as he was walking.

Abdul Gani refused to answer to the question when posed several times by reporters.

However, it is believed that Abdul Gani can play no role in Anwar's trial following assurances by the then prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, that he (Abdul Gani) would not be involved in any part of the trial.

This follows allegations by Anwar and former Kuala Lumpur CID chief Mat Zain Ibrahim that Abdul Gani and former inspector-general of police had fabricated evidence in Sodomy I following the "black-eye" incident.

Saiful's father urges appeal

Since then, a three-member panel has cleared Abdul Gani and Musa of any wrongdoing.

Anwar was acquitted of sodomy on Monday by the Kuala Lumpur High Court when presiding justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah ruled out the DNA evidence.

The prosecution led by outgoing solicitor-general II Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden has recommended an appeal be made.

The team had submitted its recommendation on Wednesday to the Trial and Appeals division of the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

However, as at yesterday division head Kamaluddin Md Said said no decision has been made to file an appeal.

Complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan and his father Azlan Md Lazim has urged the prosecution to file an appeal , citing their dignity.

The prosecution has 14 days to file an appeal from the date of verdict and because of the coming Chinese New Year holidays, the last day to file the application is on Jan 25.
