The student allegedly responsible for lowering a flag bearing Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s image during a demonstration at the Umno headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday is being investigated by his university.

Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) vice-chancellor Zakaria Kasa reportedly said that a special committee would look into the matter and would take “very stern action” if the student is found guilty of the action.

“I wish to stress that the university does not condone the (student’s) actions and it does not represent the behaviour of a responsible student,” Utusan Malaysia quoted him today.

“As a future educator, his actions are very disappointing,” he added.

He reportedly said this after receiving a memorandum from Perak assemblyperson Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib, who had led a 30-minute protest outside the university demanding action against Adam.

Berita Harian reported that the university was having difficulty contacting the student concerned as he was not on campus and his phone had been switched off.

During the protest, Adam had allegedly swapped the ‘Najib flag’ for a ‘Liberate Academic Freedom’ banner. The flag is one of a series of flags depicting Umno’s former and current presidents.

The protest action has led to “ threats ” being made against the student and he was nearly attacked by an unidentified man outside the Bukit Aman police headquarters yesterday.
