Pakatan Rakyat MPs today gave Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak seven days to call an emergency parliamentary sitting this month to debate the issue of permanent residents (PRs) who have been registered as voters.

NONE Describing the scandal as an "act of treason" and "detrimental to national security", PAS vice-president Salahudin Ayub (right) claimed that his party has identified 1,597 such cases nationwide, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Johor.

Selangor, now led by Pakatan, records the highest number , with 1,108 cases.

He said this is just part of the evidence gathered by a special taskforce set up by the party.

Should the premier reject their demand, "we will have a series of action. Just wait", warned the Kubang Kerian MP.

"We will expose all the information and the towkay behind it."

Salahudin claimed that citizenship application is a time-consuming process which may take up to 10 years, but apparently these permanent residents have managed to become citizens in just a few hours.

NONE "It is confirmed that there is a conspiracy and a syndicate which is protected by the ruling authority," he alleged.

Other MPs at the press conference included Nurul Izzah Anwar (Lembah Pantai), Liew Chin Tong (Bukit Bendera), Hatta Ramli (Kuala Krai), Kamaruddin Jaafar (Tumpat), R Sivarasa (Subang) and Siti Mariah Mahmud (Kota Raja).

Questions for the authorities

Nurul, who is also PKR vice-president, questioned whether Najib, whose mandate has yet to be tested through general election, has lost control of government agencies to elements which are attempting to grab sovereignty.

NONE DAP election strategist Liew (left) described the scandal as "the most serious crisis", making electoral reform even more necessary.

"No point going into election with this system... It is only tip of the iceberg."

Hatta, the PAS election director, was concerned that the ongoing amnesty programme for illegal immigrants is related to the scandal.

"Is this related to the changing of (a PR holder’s status ) in a few hours? Why is it being carried out now? We need answer from the NRD," he said.

On the explanation by Election Commission (EC) chairperson Abdul Aziz Yusof that the NRD had not updated the online verification system, the opposition MPs were not convinced.

Salahuddin said this "doesn't make sense" while Selangor PAS secretary Mohd Khairuddin Othman insisted that the EC and NRD have to answer three questions:

  • How is it that PR status can be changed to ‘citizen’ in just a few hours?
  • Isn't the system updated real-time when the PR status is changed?
  • If the system is not updated as claimed by the EC, shouldn’t the system be reviewed?

Khairuddin pointed out that PR holders, the majority of who are from Indonesia, could not be located at the registered addresses.

"According to our taskforce on the ground, they don't exist at the registered addresses," he claimed.

He also claimed that 243 Chinese voters , who had registered in the state constituency of Paya Jaras, Selangor, could not find their names in the draft supplementary electoral roll.
