The Bersih 2.0 crackdown continued in earnest today, with three elected representatives questioned for making references to the controversial June 9 rally at their respective ceramah recently.

Police issued notices to Gombak MP Azmin Ali and state assemblypersons for Sekinchan, Ng Swee Lim and Sri Muda, Shuhaimi Shafiei, for allegedly speaking about the movement, which has just been banned by the government.

NONE Azmin ( left ), who is also PKR deputy president, was met by an officer from the Petaling Jaya police station at the party headquarters about 2pm and questioned for 30 minutes on a ceramah he attended at Desa Mentari on June 25.

He said the questions were framed to link the ceramah with Bersih, such as what words he uttered during his talk and who were the organisers and other speakers at the event.

"On my lawyer's advice, I decided not to answer all the questions," he said when met after the officer completed his questioning.

This is the second time Azmin has been questioned by police in relation to Bersih 2.0, the first taking place sometime last week when officers went to Parliament to record his statement on a ceramah in Paya Besar.

Azmin's lawyer, N Surendran, said the action of the police in questioning Azmin was a "complete and utter abuse of power" that had no legal basis.

'Malaysia now a police state'

Surendran said it only showed that Malaysia had already become a police state, with the police and attorney-general given free reign to exercise their powers without having to adhere to existing laws.

"The police simply to harass people. If the police want to question anyone, there must be a specific crime.

"Here there is none. Simply make a speech and say Bersih, and you are slapped with a notice (for questioning)," said Surendran, who is also a PKR vice-president.

NONE Sekinchan state assemblyperson Ng Suee Lim ( left ) was questioned by policemen from Batu Pahat, Johor today for allegedly promoting Bersih in his speech.

The DAP lawmaker told Malaysiakini that the questioning lasted for 20 minutes at the Shah Alam Section 6 police station this afternoon.

"Policemen from the Batu Pahat district police headquarters came to record my statement. They said a report had been lodged against me for promoting Bersih during a PAS ceramah in Parit Raja, Batu Pahat on June 18."

However Ng refused to answer all six questions, citing Section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

He also received another fax from Seremban district police headquarters, requiring him to give his statement on Wednesday for a speech he made at a PKR ceramah on June 19 at Ampangan, Seremban.

However Ng refused to comply, arguing that the letter was not professionally handed over and signed by him, according to the law.

"These are all self-directed by the police. Police have conceded that the police reports were lodged by the Special Branch.

"Instead of wasting their manpower, resources and taxpayers money going after Bersih, I suggest they channel these resources to fight crime, which is a main concern of the people," he said.

NONE Sri Muda assemblyperson Shuhaimi Shafie ( left ), who is also Selangor PKR information chief, said he was called in this afternoon to give a statement on talks he had given last month.

"They wanted to question me on two talks, the first held at Dewan Hamzah, Klang, on June 15 and the other in Klang Jaya on June 26.

"They asked me to give a statement, saying I used the word Bersih in the ceramah . Mind you, this was before Bersih was declared illegal and what I said had nothing to do with the rally.

"They asked me about it and I used my right not to answer the question. I was there for 15 minutes and I told them I will not answer anything on Bersih," said Shuhaimi, adding that the authorities were getting really ridiculous on clamping out even on the mere utterance of the word.

This situation, he added, was truly getting out of hand and was not right for democracy.
