Malaysian students studying in Australia have been “advised” against participating in Bersih 2.0 organised rallies on July 9.

In a statement on the Education Malaysia Australia Sydney (Emas) website posted on June 24 , the agency warned that it would cooperate with the Australian authorities to take action against errant students.

The agency said that involvement with the rally would taint Malaysia’s reputation.

“Organising and participation of Malaysian students in such gatherings will taint Malaysia’s good name in the eyes of Australian citizens.

“If any such gatherings are found, Emas will cooperate with Australian authorities to take appropriate action in accordance with the law,” read the statement.

Bersih 2.0 is a movement comprising of civil society groups who are urging Malaysians to rally in Kuala Lumpur on July 9 for free and fair elections.

Similar rallies in UK and Taiwan

They are also organising similar gatherings in London, Canberra, Sydney and Taiwan where there are large Malaysian expatriate communities.

Such gatherings are to be held at 2pm Malaysian time on July 9 outside Malaysian embassies in those cities, to coincide with the rally in Kuala Lumpur.

Bersih 2.0 has said that their goals are not driven by the opposition but represents a call by the masses to reform the electoral system.

The movement’s leaders are seeking mass support in a march towards Istana Negara where a petition to the Agong on suggestions for the reforms would be submitted.

Opponents claim that Bersih 2.0 is a movement supported by the opposition with the intention to wreak havoc on July 9 and topple the federal government.
