Police have identified the man recorded in the video screened to selected journalists at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur last month having sex with an East Asian-looking woman.
Saying this today, Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar ( left ) added that the police have yet to receive feedback from the company as to the identity of the owner of the Omega-brand watch that the male is said to have left in the hotel room.
"We have already identified the male involved in the sexual act (in the video). We have sufficient evidence. However, we cannot divulge details as to who is it as it is still under investigation," Ismail said.
"The woman has been identified, but I cannot give details.
"The officers who formed part of the investigating team have been given their terms of reference to record statements from all people who can assist in the investigations (including the woman).
“Police will complete investigations soon and pass the papers to the Attorney-General's Chambers soon."
'Video clip is genuine'
Asked whether police have recorded a statement from the woman in the sex act, Ismail said the matter should be referred to the investigating officer.
“We have given directions to the investigators and I hope they do their job well and efficiently.”
He reiterated that the video clip was found to be genuine and that there should be no question as to its authenticity.
However, asked many times as to where the clip is, and whether the room in which the video was recorded was in Malaysia or overseas, Ismail appeared evasive and would only say that the matter was still under investigation.
“The video is authentic, and this has been referred to several experts. We may refer it to foreign experts. There should not be doubts as to its authenticity,” he said.
Asked whether charges could still be pressed if the incident happened outside Malaysia, Ismail said the police would make sure that the investigation was in line with the Evidence Act and Criminal Procedure Code to ensure it followed the provisions of the laws.
Ismail added that the police have identified the person responsible for recording the video, but he did not want to divulge details as the matter was being investigated on all angles.
The video of a couple having sex was on March 21 shown at Carcosa Seri Negara to several journalists. Some quarters have claimed the man resembled Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.
The Permatang Pauh MP has denied being the person in the video.
His family members, including PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, have also denied that he person was Anwar.
Three arrests were made
Asked about conflicting reports on whether the police did or did not make arrests in the case, Ismail said there were three arrests.
The 'Datuk T' who screened the sex video to journalists and several other indivuduals, later identified themselves as a trio comprising businessman Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, former Malacca chief minister Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik and former Perkasa treasurer Shuib Lazim.
They said they handed the original copy to the police when Eskay and Abdul Rahim were called to Bukit Aman three days after they screened the video on March 21.
On whether action would be taken against the three responsible for screening the sex video, Ismail reiterated that the matter was still under investigation and asked people to wait and not speculate any further.
On April 4, a teaser of the sex video also been released on the widely followed online site YouTube, but was later removed.
Police have classified the case under section 292 of the Penal Code, and Section 5 of the Film Censorship Act, which are related to the distribution or showing of obscene materials.
