The identity of 'Male Y' is slowly coming to light in the sodomy trial against Anwar Ibrahim.

NONE A second chemist said today that the DNA found in the rectal area of complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan corresponds to that found on a toothbrush, mineral water bottle and towel.

Chemist Nor Aidora Saedon told the Kuala Lumpur High Court that she arrived at this finding after comparing her report with that of DNA specialist Dr Seah Lay Hong.

"The DNA profile retrieved from the towel, toothbrush and mineral water bottle is identical to that (obtained from a semen specimen belonging to an individual identified only as) Male Y," she said during examination-in-chief this morning.

Nor Aidora testified that she had received the mineral water bottle, white toothbrush and a Good Morning towel along with two strands of hair about 6pm on July 17, 2008.

It was not revealed where the investigating officer, Jude Blacious Pereira, had obtained the samples.

Nor Aidora said she managed to obtain a DNA profile from the mineral water bottle, towel and tooth brush, but not from the two strands of hair.

The DNA profile were all from the same source, she maintained throughout the day’s proceedings.

NONE The witness was about to answer the question from DPP Noorin Badaruddin on the match probability of ‘Male Y’ and the DNA profile from the three items, when lead defence counsel Karpal Singh (left) raised an objection.

He said the defence had not been given the match probability database and statistical data population.

Karpal said this was a violation of Section 51A of the Criminal Procedure Code relating to evidence that is to be supplied to the defence.

However, Solicitor-General II Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden countered that a copy of Nor Aidora’s report had been given to the defence.

“The prosecution is using whatever the defence has in its possession as evidence in this case and does not intend to provide the match probability database and statistical data population as evidence,” he said.

He also submitted that the witness had asked the court's permission to look at her notes, and had not been barred from doing so.

What match probability shows

When the proceedings resumed in the afternoon, Karpal withdrew the objection and informed the court that the prosecution had agreed to supply the required documents to the defence.

Nor Aidora continued her testimony, explaining that she had conducted statistical DNA calculations on the match probability and based on the Malaysian database of three major races.

“I found the probability of the DNA profile having a coincidental match was 1:470 quintillion for Malays (10 to the power of 18), 1:52 quintillion (for Chinese) and 1:210 quintillion (for Indians).”

The hearing continues tomorrow with an engineer from the Chemistry Department scheduled to testify on the maintenance of the DNA machines.

Nor Aidora will be cross-examined on Friday.
