For the love of Malaysia, the Coalition against Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) is to hand over a memorandum to Putrajaya on its decision to proceed with the liberalisation move on Valentine's Day.

The group will also launch a global campaign to protest against the FTAs by sending faxes as well as messages to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak via micro blogging website Twitter and comments on Najib's 1Malaysia blog.

"The Malaysian government, despite the many concerns raised by the people on FTAs with the United States, has yet again embarked on a new FTA with the US and also with the European Union.

"The Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) with the US and the FTA with EU is again putting the livelihood and future of Malaysians at stake as they open doors to giant multinationals from both these countries to take over," coalition coordinator Y Kohila said.

  Don't sell out to US,  EU

Talks on the Trans-Pacific Partnership FTA (TPP) began in New Zealand last December, with the US and eight other nations - Australia, Brunei, Singapore, Vietnam, Chile and Peru involved.

At the same time, the Malaysia-EU FTA initiated its first round of negotiations in Brussels, Belgium.

"If you want a special date with the prime minister, join us on Valentine's Day at the Prime Minister's Office at 11am to submit our Valentine Card with the message, ‘We love this country - don't sell it out to US and EU'," Kohila said in a statement.

She called on the global community to join forces with local activists to intensify the campaign to reject both agreements as the Malaysia-EU FTA is expected to be signed by the end of this year and the TPP by next year.

Besides the handing over the memorandum and the online protest, the coalition will also kick off a nationwide leaflet campaign in Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Pahang and Kelantan on Feb 15.
