Two police constables from Damansara police station, whom businessman Chia Buang Ting identified yesterday as amongst the ones who had beaten and robbed him, have been released from police custody.

NONE "They (the accused) appointed a lawyer to act on their behalf when they were brought before the magistrate this morning to extend their remand period," said Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

"However their lawyer objected to the extension by saying that given the accused are police officers, it is unlikely for them to run away, and they can easily be found by the police if need be.

“And the magistrate agreed to their objection and released them," said Lim.

The Segambut MP said he learnt about the release of the duo from the investigating officer from IPK Selangor who had received their police report on their matter.

NONE The 34-year-old Chia ( left ) who is in the picture frames business, was also present at the press conference.

He was on the verge of tears as he passionately defended himself against police allegations that he was in possession of drugs and a parang (machete) at the time of his arrest.

As for allegations that he was passing himself off as a Datuk or a member of the royal family, Chia denied those allegations.

“The VIP card is simple a memento from a charity that he gave out,” explained Lim, speaking on Chia’s behalf.

'Not fit to be OCPD'

   

Lim also criticised Petaling Jaya OCPD Arjunaidi Mohamad for what he said is his “lack of professionalism and biasness,” adding that he think the latter is “not fit to be OCPD”.

   

“How can he tell the press that it was confirmed that two grams of heroin and a parang were found in Chia’s car?”

“Today I read in the papers that even Selangor police chief Tun Hisan Hamzah himself said that he cannot be sure that it is heroin, pending lab test results,” said Lim.

Lim challenged Arjunaidi to publicly apologise to Chia and retract his statement. Failing which, the parliamentarian said that Chia may take appropriate action against the police officer.

Chia also indicated that he is considering legal action against the those responsible for what happened to him.

“I reserve the right to sue those responsible. My reputation have been tarnished, my business affected and the reputation of my temple affected.”

“I’d rather die than be defamed by the police,”said the emotional businessman.

However, Chia’s lawyer Marcus Tan, who was also present at the press conference. said that they are not yet proceeding with a civil suit against his client’s alleged attackers pending further developments in the police investigation.

Last Saturday, Chia lodged a police report that he had been assaulted by several police officers when arrested allegedly carrying drugs at a road block in Petaling Jaya Utara.

In his report, the man also said that the policemen stole RM13,000 from him.

Chia said that he was repeatedly beaten by a group of police officers while he was detained at the Kota Damansara police station.

He identified several of his assailants in a police lineup yesterday, and the two constables aged 25 and 27 were subsequently arrested .
