Police: Namewee not under arrest, nor wanted

The police have denied that song writer and young filmmaker Wee Meng Chee is under arrest, or that they are pursuing the artist.

"No, no, no. We are not going to arrest him," said Muar district

police chief Mohammed Nasir Ramli when contacted by Malaysiakini .

Nasir confirmed that the police had indeed gone to the youngster's house in Muar yesterday night, but said that it was for another purpose.

"We just want to find out where he is," he tersely said before ending the telephone interview.

Late last night, 27-year-old Wee ( above ) - who goes by the moniker "Namewee" - shocked his fans when he posted on his Facebook page: 'Three police cars have finally come to my Muar home to arrest me' just before midnight.'

Within minutes, the message had gathered more than 800 comments and 1,000 'likes' (Facebook lingo for indication of support).

'This happened 15 minutes before our 53rd National Day Celebration',

the message continued ending in bold, capital letters with: 'This is

not a joke'.

'Yes, I'm still here but for how long more, I don't know ... my

beloved Malaysia, where is our justice system?" Wee lamented before the end.

At about 1am, Wee updated his message in Chinese stating: 'The police 15 minutes before the National Day countdown came to arrest me but I was not home , I knew I would be taken away at any time, this may be my last message...I wish you all a Happy National Day'.

His manager Fred Chong had later confirmed that three police patrol

cars had gone to Wee's house, but the latter was not at home when they arrived.

"I do not know where he is but he is(probably looking for a lawyer to understand the proper procedure (in handling his situation)," said Chong, when asked on the whereabouts of Wee.

At press time, Wee is still uncontactable.

Meanwhile MCA president Chua Soi Lek said he would support the government if it were to take action against Namewee.

Chua had previously helped to solve the  "Negarakuku" controversial three years ago by organising a press conference in which Namewee's father apologised to the government  on his behalf.

Chua said that Namewee has abused the Internet by releasing a video clip that disturbed the harmony of the country. Any form of racial or religious extremism should not be tolerated, he added.

Chua told reporters after turning up at the 53th Merdeka Celebration at Bukit Jalil Stadium that "will support whatever action against him (Namewee)." 

Chua added, however, that the two headmistress who had made racial slurs against students in Johor and Kedah must also be punished to show that government has zero tolerance against extremism. 

The rapper had raised ire with his latest three-minute video titled "Nah" criticising the Malay headmistress who had apparently made racial slurs against her students in secondary school in his Johor homestate.

Claiming that he may be inciting racial tension with his video, the police said that he is under investigation for sedition.

Namewee's first claim to fame was when he posted up a social commentary rap video "Negarakuku" three years ago.

While he was also under police investigation then, several Umno politicians have called for his citizenship to be revoked.
