Surau committee suspended, Teo gets warning
The Selangor Islamic Council (MAIS) has suspended the Al Huda surau committee and issued DAP's Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching a caution letter for addressing a gathering inside the surau prayer hall in Kajang last Sunday.
The Selangor Islamic Council (MAIS) has suspended the Al Huda surau committee and issued DAP's Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching a caution letter for addressing a gathering inside the surau prayer hall in Kajang last Sunday.
The Al Huda surau committee is the second surau or mosque panel in the state to be suspended.
Selangor Islamic Council chairperson Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa said today the Selangor Sultan is also extremely upset over the incident.
"The sultan has ordered prompt and serious action be taken against the surau. We called the surau's management today and after evaluating their explanation, we found the report of the MP giving a speech in the prayer hall to be true," he said.
"MAIS views such an incident seriously as it involves a politician and a non-Muslim. MAIS has decided to take over the management of the surau with immediate effect as the incident is clearly against the sultan's orders. Furthermore, we will issue a caution letter to Teo," he said.
Adzib also reminded all non-Muslim elected representatives not to do such a thing and not to use mosques.
"I hope all the people, including political parties, will be sensitive to the feelings of Muslims and adhere to the orders of the Sultan of Selangor. This is to preserve the sanctity of the mosque and surau," he said.
Utusan Malaysia had in its front page report today highlighted Teo entering the prayer hall of the Al Huda surau and giving what it called a tazkirah (religious advice).
However, Serdang PAS Youth chief Mohd Adram Musa, described it as not a problem, while Teo asked why her sincere motive was being questioned.
