Inspector-general of police Musa Hassan today denied a newspaper report that he has tendered his resignation to Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein Onn, five months before the end of his contract.

According to China Press , the police chief is expected to formally step down on March 25 at a function commemorating the 203rd Police Day.

musa hassan police igp pc 250607 mum In the front-page report, the newspaper ( below ) quoted sources said that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Hishammuddin have both accepted his resignation.

However, Musa this morning denied he was quitting.

“I have not submitted any resignation letter to the prime minister or anyone. I want to know if the source is from an official channel or from the ‘underground’,” he told Star Online .

Musa said that should the source is someone from the 'underground', then he felt sorry for the country.

He added that if 'underground' figures could manipulate the post of the country's top cop, then Malaysia was heading for disaster.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin's press officer Nik Ahmad Khusairi Nik Ibrahim, when contacted by Malaysiakini , also denied the reports of the IGP's resignation.

"The minister has denied (the report) at a press conference in Kemaman Terengganu just now," he said.

Describing the report as a lie, Hishammuddin said he had instructed the ministry's secretary-general Mahmood Adam to ask the newspaper editor to explain the report.

"If there are any changes, I will know... I have an excellent relation with the inspector-general of police and his deputy.

"It's impossible that they can resign without my knowledge. The report is a lie and I will take a stern action."

When contacted, China Press editor-in-chief Teoh Yong Khoon declined to comment on the controversy.

Reports of Musa’s resignation - five months before he was due to end his contract - came a day after former No 3 in the police force, Ramli Yusuff, was acquitted of failing to declare his multi-million ringgit assets.

Controversial figure

Ramli has accused Musa himself of having links with underworld figures and the man behind his persecution, leading to him being charged by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and his suspension from the force.

Musa, 59, who is the eighth IGP, has served in the top post for four years since he was appointed on Sept 12, 2006. He was given a two-year contract after he reached the compulsory retirement age in 2007.

Last year, his contract was renewed for another year. The opposition kicked up a storm over the renewal of his contract.

Musa joined police force in 1969. He was appointed Johor police chief in 2003. A year later, he was moved to the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman where he headed the criminal investigation department (CID). In 2005, he was made deputy IGP.

He also has a law degree from Britain.

Investigated by police and ACA

He was accused by Anwar of colluding with attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail, who was then a senior public prosecutor, in fabricating evidence against the former deputy premier.

However, following a poice report made by Anwar two years ago, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Aziz cleared Musa last March when he announced that an independent investigation panel found that the top cop was not involved in fabricating evidence.

In 2007, Musa was investigated on allegation that he was paid RM2.1million for the release of three members of illegal betting syndicates from custody.

The Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) was lodged by then Internal Security Minister Johari Baharum, who himself was accused of similar links to underworld figures. [See chart above]

However, AG Abdul Gani ordered the then ACA to close the investigations for lack of evidence. Two months later, Musa got his two-year contract from the government to continue as IGP.
