It is not possible for a female politician to fill the head of government role in any state in the country as royal protocol and meeting with religious department officials will remain stumbling blocks to such a move.

BN senior executive councillor Hamidah Osman told Malaysiakini today that a female politician can become a minister but not a menteri besar.

"As menteri besar, one has to meet the Tuanku where protocol is involved and one has to meet religious officers and in such situations it is not possible for a woman to become the head of a state government," she said.

She said this post has always been dominated by men and will remain so despite all the talk about equal rights.

Hamidah was commenting on media speculation that she was offered the state's top post by the then deputy premier Najib Abdul Razak when she allegedly helped the three Pakatan assemblypersons cross over to the BN, resulting in the collapse of the Pakatan's 10 month rule last year.

But according to media speculation some Umno members had objected to the offer, so Zambry Abd Kadir became the replacement.

Hamidah hotly denied this speculation and said, "At no time did Najib offer me this post and I did not play the main role in enticing them to cross over as there were other internal factors that made them walk out of the party.

"Besides Jamaluddin was a very strong supporter of Anwar Ibrahim and the reason he left was the feuding within the Pakatan coalition," she said.

She also brushed aside speculation of a snap elections for the state after the Chinese New Year celebrations.

"The people are happy with the BN rule and only the 28 (Pakatan assemblypersons) are calling for the elections," she said.

"Besides, it is not cheap as it will cost the state treasury some RM118 million."
