Contrary to claims by the PAS leadership, Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad was not the only party leader to take the controversial ‘divorce oath'.

In a blog entry today, blogger Tulang Besi, posted a four-minute audio clip purportedly featuring the voice of Selangor PAS chief Hasan Ali confirming that all PAS candidates must do so before standing for elections.

"If we 'melompat' (defect) that means we must divorce the wife 'talak tiga' (Islamic proclaimation of divorce)," said a man who sounded like Hasan Ali.

"That is why in Kelantan, it was able to maintain a one-seat majority for two years and six months. Why? I think it's because of the pledge," he added.

"But I have said, should (Dr) Halimah (Ali, Selat Kelang state assemblyperson) want to leave the party, I don't know if she has to divorce her husband," the person added, drawing laughter from the crowd.

"If you hope to have PAS people joining other parties, it is almost, next to, impossible. Unless he is insane," the voice summed up towards the end of the recording.

Report made against Hasan

This remark provoked a member of the audience into quipping: "So Ibrahim Ali (Pasir MAS MP) has no chance (of joining PAS). He likes to jump around."

The audio clip was allegedly recorded at a private residence during a dialogue session between Hasan and several pro-PAS and pro-Umno bloggers on an unknown date.

The ‘divorce oath' controversy was sparked by Shah Alam parliamentarian Khalid Samad, who made the matter public as result of which he was at the receiving end of heavy brickbats, as was PAS, because certain quarters felt it was tantamount to degrading women.

In a damage control effort, PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali told a packed press conference yesterday that Khalid was the only person who took the ‘divorce oath' as part of his ba'iah (loyalty pledge) to the party.

He added that it was not party policy and Khalid's was an "isolated case". He even added that the oath was "degrading" to women.

However, Tulang Besi audio is likely to kick up a greater fuss as the blogger claims he has already submitted the recording to the party disciplinary committee, alleging that Hasan had breached party secrets.
